Welcome to Bearings: Navigating Life-as-Ministry.
Bearings is published by The BTS Center, a related ministry of the United Church of Christ. The blog aims to equip and support faith leaders—clergy and lay alike—as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of 21st-century faith, culture, and ministry. As an ecumenical publication rooted in mainline Protestantism, Bearings enjoys a national readership.
Bearings contributors work in a variety of contexts, including ministry, activism, academia, consulting, business, and the nonprofit sector. Their pieces reflect diverse literary genres, such as academic inquiry, theological reflection, personal narrative, and cultural critique.
Bearings posts cover a range of topics, including new media and religion, social justice, millennials and the church, congregational leadership, engaging the religiously unaffiliated, and creativity.
The Bearings audience is comprised of readers and thinkers who are interested in faith, spirituality, and leadership. While not all of them are affiliated with religious communities, most are—and many are involved in ordained or lay ministry. All in all, Bearings readers are grappling with questions of what it means to be religious, to be spiritual, to be church, to minister, and to live in the twenty-first century.
Edited by Dr. Elizabeth Drescher, PhD and the Reverend Alyssa Lodewick, Bearings has won multiple DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards of Excellence from the Religion Communicators Council, a national interfaith association of religion communicators at work in print and electronic communication, marketing, and public relations.
